Integrated work
Mental skills and therapy in one session, weighted toward whatever's actually driving the problem right now. Where most people end up.
When the slump and the sleep are the same problem
You came in about a shooting slump. You're also not sleeping. You came in about anxiety before meets, and there's also a real technical issue underneath it that's feeding the anxiety. You're back from the injury physically and something about competing hasn't come back with you.
This is where most people actually are. It's also where the field's usual division of labor breaks down, the mental skills coach isn't licensed for half of it, and the therapist doesn't know what your season looks like.
What it actually looks like
One provider, one hour, one relationship. The mix shifts as things change. Some weeks it's routines, cue words, and visualization. Some weeks it's what's sitting underneath them. It all depends on what would be most helpful to you in the moment.
You don't re-explain your history to a second person when the emphasis moves. You don't wait six weeks for an intake somewhere else. Nothing gets dropped in the handoff, because there isn't one.
This is not a bait-and-switch
If you come for performance work and performance work is what you need, that's what you get, about a quarter of the people I see never do anything else. What integrated means is that if something heavier turns out to be sitting underneath, we keep going instead of starting over.
Whenever the work crosses from consulting into treatment, I'll say so out loud, what changes, what it means for confidentiality, and you decide. You'll never find out after the fact that the frame shifted.
